Association

The BC Chinese Music Association (BCCMA) was established in 1995 by Chinese music enthusiasts with the aim of promoting the culture and heritage of Chinese music. In the same year of its founding, the association also established the BC Chinese Orchestra (BCCO), a large ensemble of 35 to 50 members, with the goal of gradually bringing together music lovers, professionals, and amateurs. Subsequently, in 2001, the BC Chinese Youth Orchestra (BCYCO) was formed, primarily to nurture the performance skills of young musicians. Later, in 2003, the BC Chinese Music Ensemble (BCCME) was founded, composed mainly of professionals who actively invited composers from various countries, particularly local Canadian composers, to create works performed with Chinese instruments. In 2024, the BC Chinese Chamber Ensemble (BCCCE) was established, with its core mission focused on community outreach—actively performing voluntarily at institutions such as nursing homes and cancer centers, while also being active in various cultural and music festivals, serving the community through music.

Through years of operation, the organization’s ensembles have grown from an initial 30 members to over 70, spanning ages from eight to seventy. This nonprofit organization has become a platform for Canadian-born Chinese and Chinese instrument performers who have immigrated from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China.

BCCMA performs annually at various cultural, festive, and charitable events. In addition to its annual performances, the association provides opportunities for Canadian composers to integrate multicultural elements into the sounds and melodies of Chinese instruments. Our growth has transcended the boundaries of ethnicity, identity, and race, weaving together the voices of members from diverse backgrounds and uniting the collective passion that contributes to Canada’s music scene.

Education is also a key objective of our organization. Since 2006, we have officially established Chinese music examinations in Vancouver, in collaboration with the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. Nurturing the legacy of Chinese music in Canada has become another mission we pursue. Since 2001, we have partnered with the Kiwanis Music Festival, incorporating a Chinese instruments category into the event. This provides exposure for young people and professionals passionate about Chinese music.
