Jin (Jack) Zhang,composer and conductor, received his first musical education at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Then he traveled to Japan and studied at Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, Japan. He also studied conducting in master classes with maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama and Seiji Ozawa.

Jin Zhang, associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre, is a multiple recipient of commissioning grants from the Canada Council for the Arts. In 2006, he was selected by the Canadian Music Centre to be part of their new online initiative entitled “Composer Portraits – Influences of Many Musics.” This project focuses on Canadian composers who have come to Canada from other countries, highlighting their valuable contributions to Canadian music. His compositions have been played by many major orchestras that include the Vancouver Symphony, the Calgary Philharmonic Symphony, the Victoria Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony.

Jin Zhang (Jack) is an internationally awarded artist. His acknowledgements include AVIFF Award Cannes in France for his film score of “Lama in the West”, Artistic Achievement Awards issued by Vancouver Chinese Culture Centre,the multimedia project “High Muck A Muck” that he did composition and sound design received the Main Prize in an international competition in England, the composition “Fire” received a nomination for Eclectic Song in the 17th International Independent Music Awards in USA, CD tracing received nomination for the best instrumental music album in the West canada Music Award. In his early years, his compositions won prizes in competitions in China. In 2004, Jin Zhang was honored by the City of New Westminster for ten years of distinguished service to the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra.

Currently Jin Zhang holds the position of Music Director and Conductor in the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Youth Symphony Intermediate Orchestra. He is also an artistic director of Canada Chinese Performing Arts Society. He was a resident composer in Casalmaggiore International Music Festival 2015 in Italy, Artistic Director of Golden Maple International Film Festival in Vancouver and White Rock City Moon Festival 2019. He was also invited for some adjudication at the BC Arts Council for the professional music project, Kiwanis Music Festival for symphony orchestra, large ensemble and Chinese instruments and concerto competition at the Vancouver Academy of Music.

張進曾就讀於中央音樂學院指揮係是從鄭小瑛楊鴻年學習指揮,後赴日本桐棚音樂大學,在秋山何慶和小澤徵爾的大師班深造。張進現在新世界漢樂團,溫哥華愛樂交響樂團,新威斯敏斯特交響樂團,溫哥華青年交響樂團,溫哥華劇院樂團擔任音樂總監和指揮,加拿大中華表演藝術協會藝術總監,雲南藝術學院文化院客座教授。 張進曾在義大利舉辦的國際音樂節擔任指揮和作曲,分別在加拿大金楓葉國際電影節和白石市濱海月亮節擔任藝術總監。張進也曾受邀指揮廈門愛樂交響樂團和廣東省民族樂團。

張進的藝術才能是多方面的,他在音樂項目上的覆蓋面非常廣泛,而他在現代數碼藝術,如電子音樂,音效及影像設計及處理等方面也同樣很有造詣。在溫哥華冬季奧運會期間,張進在由奧運藝術基金會支持的原創項目中擔任作曲,音效設計和音樂總監。

2011年,張進創作了交響詩“來自金山的聲音”,第一次用交響樂語言表達華人早期加拿大移民生活。作品是由溫哥華青年交響樂團委約,加拿大移民部出資配合加拿大政府正式向華人就歷史上對華裔不平等待遇道歉所開展的文化及教育計畫。作品由張進指揮首演。不少曾隨加拿大軍隊參加過第二次世界大戰的華裔老兵受邀佩戴著勳章出席了首演儀式。音樂會被媒體稱具有劃時代意義。

張進除了在法國嘎納藝術電影節和英國國際多媒體比賽獲獎外,他還在加拿大獲藝術成就獎,獲由新威斯敏斯特市長頒發的對該市交響樂團的優秀指導獎,被加拿大音樂中心選入對加拿大音樂有貢獻的作曲家專欄,他的由加拿大國家藝術基金出資出版的作品專輯獲加拿大西部音樂獎最佳器樂音樂專輯提名。張進早年也曾在中國全國音樂作品比賽和中央音樂學院作品比賽獲獎。他的作品被許多北美的樂團在音樂會上演奏。他曾接受來自世界著名的舊金山交響樂團的委約從事創作。張進的名字收錄在由中國國家出版的(世界文化名人辭典)海外華人卷內。

近期,他剛獲得了加拿大聯邦藝術委員的基金從事新作品的創作。
